As
an add-on to our other birding trips in Southern Thailand,
Hala Bala offers species that simply aren't available
elsewhere. In fact, almost all of the species of hornbills
in Thailand can be seen in Hala Bala!
Hala Bala
was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1996. This park
is on the border with Malaysia and covers over 400 square
kilometers covering.
This
four-day birding trip includes an afternoon visit to
the nearby peat swamp forest at Pa Pru.
This ancient peat forest covers almost 200 square kilometers.
At least 400 plant species have been identified there
and over 200 animal species have been identified! A
wooden walkway makes traveling through this magical
wonderland very easy. The walkway also protects the
fragile ecosystem.
The accommodations are at research center. The rangers
are usually very helpful in telling us the best recent
birding locations. In the past, rangers have led us
to sightings of owls and frogmouths.

Getting
there
From
Phuket the only way is to drive. From Bangkok guests
could get a flight to Narathiwat and get picked up there.
Combining
a trip to Hala Bala with Khao
Nor Chuchi and/or Krung
Ching truly maximizes your species
count... and the chance of seeing very unique and rare
birds is very high indeed!

Note:
this is a troubled area and has been for many decades.
There are army road blocks every 10 km or so but they're
not a problem. We just drive to the park and don't go
to any towns, thus minimizing any risk.
