This
small national park is well off the beaten path.
In fact, until we visited them, they park
rangers hadn't seen any foreigners in their park
before. They were very friendly and accommodating.
The park has very nice waterfalls
and well-kept trails. One of the easiest ways
to see a lot of birds just happens to be hiking
along the road bordering the park. We are always
shocked at how many birds we see here. The lovely
Asian Paradise-Flycatcher is
common here.
The
terrain is evergreen jungle and bamboo.
This foliage provides habitat for a large variety
of birds. Common sightings include Chestnut-naped
Forktail, Cream-vented Bulbul, Yellow-bellied
Bulbul, Ochraceous Bulbuls, Stripe-throated Bulbuls,
Black-crested Bulbuls, Red-throated Barbets, Yellow-rumped
Flycatcher, Yellow-breasted Flowerpecker, Purple-naped
Sunbird, Indian Cuckoo, Banded Bay Cuckoo, Violet
Cuckoo, Raffles' Malkoha, Scarlet-rumped Trogon,
Black-and-yellow Broadbil, Blue-winged Pitta,
Hooded Pitta and a lot more. Hornbills inhabit
the lush jungle. The rare Rhinoceros Hornbill
has been see here. Great Hornbills and Oriental-pied
Hornbills are common.
Accommodations
in Khao Nam Kang
There
aren't any bungalows in the park. We
stay in the town of Sadao. This small town seldom
sees foreigners. There are plenty of great restaurants
in town. You'll get real Thai food, not the watered-down
touristy version. This is not to say that you'll
be eating a plate of chilies, but you'll get the
authentic tastes. We also know a great little
family-run bakery for your pastry cravings.
