Great Hornbills - Khao Sok National Park

Cheow Lan Reservoir is a superb place to spot hornbills. Regular hornbill spottings include Great Hornbills, Bushy-crested Hornbills, Oriental Pied Hornbills, Southern Pied Hornbills, Wreathed Hornbills, White-crowned Hornbills and Helmeted Hornbills. The best time of year to see hornbills is November and December as that's when a lot of trees, especially fig trees (sp. ficus) are in fruit. It is not uncommon to see four or more species of hornbills feeding together, along with other birds, monkeys, gibbons and other animals. Pigs and deer feed at the bottom of these trees.

A magnificent male Great Hornbill eating berries. Note the red eye and black spot under the front of the cask. This is actually pretty easy to see from a great distance.

image female Great Hornbill

Here is a female Great Hornbill. Note that she has a white eye encircled by red skin. She also doesn't have the black spot under the front of the cask.

Here is another shot of a female enjoying some ripe berries.

A very difficult photo to take, Melissa caught this male in flight. The whoosing sound that these monsterous birds make warns you to start looking around. In other words, you often hear them coming before actually seeing them.

Chiew Lan Reservoir is 165 square kilometers in size. The easiest way to spot birds and other wildlife is from the seat of a kayak. It's very easy and relaxing. You can do this!
